Overheard at the Circus aka food for thought: "If you were a newspaper executive, and you saw that the Internet was coming, and you ran all the numbers—you got all these smart guys to run the numbers in every scenario possible—and all the scenarios that showed survival show you making a tenth of what you're making now...you're going to do the only thing you can do, which is dig in your heels and drag the old business model out as long as possible."

Ten years from now will we be thanking newspaper execs for saving our jobs for a few years longer? Is there no way to employ the same number of newspaper writers online—would the margins just be too narrow? Or were the bosses just getting greedy?
