Speaking of Work-Life Balance..

Speaking of work-life balance and working moms, the WSJ has a piece today about returning to work after taking years off to raise kids.
Columnist Sue Shellenberger says that these moms might be facing the toughest job search of anyone.

“Beyond the recession and employer bias against dropouts, many also are burdened by outdated skills and self-doubt,” she says. And while there’s no way to eliminate that bias, there are a few creative strategies stay-at-home parents can use to get back into the workforce.

A design manager who took ten years off took the dates off her resume and added in her extensive volunteer work. She landed a job in marketing at Watson Wyatt (now Towers Watson).

A former advertising director took a step down in pay to snag a sales job at a glossy regional magazine in Colorado. She doesn’t see it as a step down, she sees it as an opportunity to learn a new skill and still spend time with her kids (the job’s just part-time).

Just one of the moms mentioned in the piece turned the break into a positive: a former client services director for a wealth management concern was hired by Globe Wealth Advisors, partly because the company wanted to start with a clean canvas. We didn’t want someone coming in and saying, ‘This is the way Goldman Sachs does it,’” co-CEO Bert A. Getz Jr. told the WSJ.

Are you trying to get back into the workforce after taking some time off? Tell us about it.
