According to sources, the changes are Adler’s way of “putting his stamp on the organization”—not necessarily because they are needed. Adler, former Businessweek editor in chief, started at Reuters in February.
Likely targets for cuts: editors. Talking Biz News points out that Reuters has three editor levels: “specialist editors, such as those overseeing company coverage, stock market coverage, Treasuries, commodities and other specializations; bureau chiefs, who oversee regional coverage; and a team of managing editors. There’s also a group of editors called ‘Top News.’” One of these levels is likely to be cut.
Also, global managing editor Betty Wong is leaving the news service as of May 27 and Stuart Karle, former general counsel for the Wall Street Journal who is now advising Adler on the reorg, is expected to be offered a management position when the dust settles.
