So Much For ‘No Closures’ at Condé Nast

It is just a bad news Monday, y’all.

Condé Nast is closing four mags as part of its attempt to trim 25% from its budgets, after analysts (and sources inside the company) theorized that there would not be any title closures.

The victims: Gourmet, which has been published since 1940; Cookie, Modern Bride, and Elegant Bride.

Gawker’s got the internal memo, which we’re excerpting here:

We have now completed an extensive review of our business – an important undertaking given the dramatic changes in the U.S. economy. The review has led us to a number of decisions designed to navigate the company through the economic downturn and to position us to take advantage of coming opportunities.

Condé Nast’s success comes from the ability of our publications to attract readers with a wide range of interests, as well as advertisers who value them. But in this economic climate it is important to narrow our focus to titles with the greatest prospects for long-term growth.

In the memo, CEO Chuck Townsend thanks the “editorial and business staffs” of these four titles for “their hard work and dedication” and in the next graf goes on to talk more about “workforce reduction.” So sorry, folks.

Steve Blacker Gives Career Reinvention Advice In “You Can’t Fall Off The Floor”

Steve Blacker, who’s worked at Time, Playboy, Money Magazine, Village Voice, New York Post, Cue Magazine, Medical Economics, Ski View, American Heritage, and tons more, is dishing out the advice in his new book, “You Can’t Fall Off The Floor.” Since, as Blacker says, “getting a job today is a job,” we guess he figures media people can use all the help they can get.

Blacker’s book also contains advice from 30-plus magazine/agency/client execs (Jack Kliger, Carol Smith, Cathie Black, Michael Clinton, George Lois, Chuck Townsend, etc) waxing on the subject of career reinvention and the “traits necessary for a successful career.”

Anyone checked the book out?

More Chatter About Cuts At Conde Nast

Last Thursday CEO Chuck Townsend issued a company wide e-mail, as seen here at MediaMemo, warning that “we have to make additional difficult decisions to manage costs and ensure our financial well-being.”

While personnel cuts were not specifically addressed in this missive, warning bells are ringing through out the industry and scoopers, like mediaisdying, are stirring up gossip stew issuing requests for inside information.

While the future does not look all sunshine and happiness for Conde Nast right now, no cuts have been officially made or announced in any department, so everyone can stop gnashing their teeth. We’ll let you know when news changes.
