Top Execs Make the Case for Not Using E-mail

Got e-mails? If you’re constantly checking your in-box throughout the day, you’re not alone. Sure, experts have said you shouldn’t respond throughout the day because then you’re not tackling what really needs to get done but maybe this will build a stronger case for you. It certainly did for us.

A piece on BusinessWeek points out Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig told SportsBusiness Journal he has never used e-mail. And he “never will.”

He’s not the only one to live and successfully work without Outlook. According to the piece, Janet Napolitano has said she never uses e-mail either. The secretary of the Department of Homeland Security told reporters, “I think e-mail just sucks up time.”

As for another success story, Sheldon Adelson just happened to be the 19th wealthiest person in the world as of 2011. His net worth? A cool $26.5 billion as per the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. At an investment conference he proclaimed, “I don’t have a computer. And I don’t use e-mails.”

Another billionaire, Brad Kelley, does not use e-mail and apparently he’s averse to the telephone, too. The magnate owns more than a million acres of land here in America and built his fortune selling discount cigarettes. A Florida-based attorney told The Wall Street Journal, “You don’t call Brad Kelley, he calls you.”

Okay, so what can we take away from this concept? We’re not billionaires — yet. Maybe we’re wired too much, maybe we should pick up the phone more and maybe we can still achieve success and work-life balance without being connected to our devices 24/7. Hmmm.
