When The Freelance Checks Stop Coming
Horrible, horrible, horrible. Freelancers who worked for a textbook “developer” called Inkwell Publishing Solutions have told the New York Times that Inkwell owes them thousands of dollars. Inkwell says it’s owed money from its client, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, but won’t say anything else. Houghton Mifflin won’t comment.
Meanwhile, Taylor Baxter owes the IRS $4,000 and is two months late on rent. Jan Kraus has dropped her health insurance coverage. Jennifer Mallow picked up night shifts at Macy’s to afford subway fare and laundry. There are almost 30 or more additional stories.
This is the dark side of freelancing to be sure. When it’s good, even in a recession, it’s good—”You can’t be laid off”—is the mantra at most freelance gatherings I attend. But this. This is something else.
Our heart goes out to these freelancers.
