2005: MSNBC (Barely) Retains 3rd Place, But Headline News Has Momentum

In 2005, MSNBC and CNN Headline News fought for the right to claim third place in the ratings. Nancy Grace put up a fight, but MSNBC still won by a hair:

25-54 demographic: The networks virtually tied in total day, with HLN averaging 100,000 viewers and MSNBC averaging 99,000. In primetime, MSNBC beat HLN by 19,000 viewers (147k vs. 128k).

Total viewers: MSNBC beat HLN by 10,000 viewers in total day and 13,000 viewers in primetime.

But HLN has the momentum: It was up 16% in total day, while MSNBC was only up 3% in the total day demo and down 1% in total viewers. In primetime, HLN was up more than 50%, while MSNBC was only up 7% in the primetime demo and down 3% in total viewers…
