A Tweet Revealing Agassi’s Meth Use Sends Couric Back to Las Vegas
The NYTimes has an interesting story about how the news of tennis great Andre Agassi‘s admission of using crystal meth was revealed.
Agassi writes about using the drug in his autobiography, Open. Time Inc. bought the rights to run excerpts in Sports Illustrated and People.
But the crystal meth news was inadvertently revealed in a Tweet by a Sports Illustrated reporter a day before the magazines published. The tweet was removed about 25 minutes after it went live, but, not surprisingly, the news had already spread around the world.
Katie Couric had the exclusive TV interview with Agassi, which aired in two parts last night on “60 Minutes.” The Times‘ Tim Arango writes, “Apparently, neither Ms. Couric nor her producers decided to ask Mr. Agassi directly about the crystal meth use, although he brought up drug use in general when discussing his depression. But once the news broke, and the media storm ensued, Ms. Couric went back to Las Vegas on Tuesday to ask Mr. Agassi about it and his take on the public’s reaction.”
