Clem Lane, a longtime editorial staffer for ABC News passed away last night, announced ABC News president Ben Sherwood. Lane, who joined ABC News in 1983 had worked in the London, Los Angeles and New York newsrooms over the years. I’m writing with very sad news. Our dear friend and longtime colleague Clem Lane passed away this evening surrounded by his family. Clem’s father just informed us that he succumbed to the disease that he fought fiercely over the past year and half. Clem was 50 years old.

Clem started at the ABC newsdesk in 1983 and worked in our London and Los Angeles bureaus before coming home to New York in 2003. Anyone who knew Clem was touched by his passion for three things: the news, music, and above all his daughter, Kinzie.

Like all of you, I worked with Clem over many years and on this unhappy night, I’m reminded of a life fully lived and his unfailingly funny take on the days events.

I’m also convinced that while we mourn his loss, we must celebrate Clem’s life and work and remember that we are surrounded by many very special people at ABC News.
