Roger Goodman Steps Aside from ABC News

Goodman_4.27.jpgLegendary ABC News director Roger Goodman is leaving day-to-day work at the network.

Goodman will focus on his independent production company while still making himself available to ABC News as needed. In a memo to staff, ABC News president David Westin writes, "Roger Goodman's profound effect on television news and sports cannot be overstated."

Goodman was director for special projects for the network. His last big project was the Academy Awards telecast but he's worked on the Olympics, elections, the Millenium and more in his more than 30 years with ABC News.

After the jump, the Westin and Goodman memos...

After more than three decades helping to shape every aspect of ABC News, Roger has asked for a different role here. Fresh off his very successful directing of the Oscars, Roger wants to expand his work to include other challenges outside the company.

So beginning May 1, Roger will focus more of his efforts on growing his independent production company, giving him more control over his schedule and the work he takes on. Roger will continue to be part of the ABC News family. He will be available to offer advice and work on projects throughout the division.

Roger Goodman's profound effect on television news and sports cannot be overstated. He has directed every kind of special event imaginable from the Millennium to war coverage and from election nights to the Olympics. He has pioneered the use of new technology through live programming from nuclear submarines, aircraft carriers and, most recently, an 11-car rolling Amtrak train.

Rogers's enthusiasm, creativity, and attention to detail are legendary. We are fortunate that he will remain very much a part of ABC News for many years to come and wish him all the best as he opens a new chapter in his life.

This has been the most unbelievable ride imaginable. It has been a true privilege to work side by side with many of you on the coverage of some of the most historic events of our time. I am so grateful for your support and friendship.

If someone told me 45 years ago that I would be given the opportunity to direct the Olympics, the Millennium, and the Oscars I wouldn't believe it were possible. And yet here I am, all these years later, with those experiences and many more to be thankful for. It has been the greatest gift to have worked with the best production and engineering teams in the industry.

As David mentioned, I will still be available when needed to work on projects here. And though I will be taking on new challenges outside the company, my heart will always belong to ABC News.

Roger
