Anchors Away in the Gulf of Mexico

With the BP oil spill finally reaching the coastline of the Gulf of Mexico, “CBS Evening News” anchor Katie Couric and “ABC World News” anchor Diane Sawyer are in the region looking at the devastation firsthand. Both evening news broadcasts will originate from the region tonight.

While in Louisiana, Couric flew over the spill with Rear Adm. Mary Landry, who is coordinating the response, and went out on a boat with an oceanographer from SMU.

Sawyer moderated a town hall discussion about the spill in Marrero, La., with portions of the discussion airing on this morning’s “Good Morning America” and tonight’s “World News.”

Brian Williams was the first anchor on the ground in the region, anchoring the “NBC Nightly News” from the region three weeks ago while his competitors stayed in new York to cover the aftermath of the attempted bombing in Times Square.
