August ’09 Ratings: Bill O’Reilly Tops ‘Grey’s Anatomy,’ ‘The Office’

In August, FNC beat the combined averages of CNN and MSNBC in Total Viewers and the A25-54 demo both in primetime and in total day. In prime, FNC averaged 2.29M Total Viewers and 590K viewers in the demo. “The O’Reilly Factor” (105 months as the top cable news show) had its five most watched programs of the year in August and topped summer reruns on ABC and NBC including “30 Rock,” “The Office,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” and “Ugly Betty.” The Factor was up 33% in Total Viewers and up 62% in the demo, year-over-year.

“Glenn Beck” was up 108% in Total Viewers/up 173% in the demo (compared to America’s Election HQ airing at 5pmET last August); Hannity was up 23% in Total Viewers/up 32% in the demo; and “On the Record with Greta Van Susteren” was up 34% in Total Viewers/up 45% in the demo.

FNC was the only news network to post increases in all categories compared to last August — up 17% in Total Viewers and up 25% in the demo. This was the best month for FNC in the primetime demo so far this year.

- Fox News Channel continued to set records in August by posting its highest Prime Time ratings in the A25-54 demographic for all of 2009.

- Among basic cable networks, FNC ranked third in Prime Time viewership behind only USA and TNT, while CNN and MSNBC finished 22nd and 25th, respectively. In Total Day, FNC ranked fourth.

- FNC had the top 11 programs in cable news in August based on total viewership with each program posting remarkable double-digit growth over the same time period last year.

- Special Report with Bret Baier was up 28% in P2+ and up 51% in A 25-54); The FOX Report with Shepard Smith was up 18% in P2+ and up 31% in A25-54.

- In Total Day, FNC once again posted double-digits increases and beat both CNN and MSNBC combined. In total viewers, FNC averaged 1,210,000 viewers (up 17%) compared with CNN’s 573,000 viewers (down 13%) and MSNBC’s 394,000 viewers (down 21%). In the 25-54 demo, FNC averaged 328,000 (up 25%) compared with CNN’s 162,000 (down 29%) and MSNBC’s 142,000 (down 31%).
