Gibson Honored With Fred Friendly Award

Gibson_5.7.jpgABC's Charlie Gibson will be honored with Quinnipiac University's Fred Friendly First Amendment Award this June. Friendly, a radio and TV news pioneer, famously left the business in 1966 when CBS chose to air The Lucy Show instead of a Senate hearing on U.S. involvement in Vietnam. In 2005, George Clooney played Fred Friendly in Good Night and Good Luck.

Past honorees of the Friendly award include Christiane Amanpour, Tom Brokaw, Peter Jennings, Bob Schieffer and Lesley Stahl.

As an interesting aside, the University is battling students over the school's Newspaper editorial board. The school decided to hand-pick the board for next school year, and that's not sitting well with the students. Quinnipiac Chronicle editors are now considering severing ties with the school permanently.

Kimberly Dozier To Be Honored For "Excellence In Journalism"

Kimberly Dozier.jpg CBS News correspondent Kimberly Dozier will be honored tomorrow night by the Milwaukee Press Club for "excellence in journalism at the national level".

Dozier will be on hand in Milwaukee to receive her Sacred Cat Award, a tradition since 1973. Previous recipients include Aaron Brown, Judy Woodruff, and Max Robinson.

"We are extremely pleased to have Kimberly Dozier as this year's Sacred Cat honoree," said Press Club president Marilyn Krause in a press release. "Her award-winning work as a reporter and foreign correspondent places her among the best of the best, and what she has achieved in the face of numerous challenges is most remarkable. We will be honored to have her with us and hear her story at our Gridiron event."

Her story, of course, includes surviving a Baghdad bomb blast in 2006. Dozier's new book Breathing the Fire, in which she writes of the incident and her recovery, comes out May 13.

The 20/20 report from Ross and Walter in September 2007 focused on Dateline NBC's To Catch a Predator series, and highlighted the lawsuit arising from the series' stop in Terrell, Texas.

Haddad Honored for Newsweek's Video Ventures

Haddad_4.8.JPGFormer MSNBC VP Tammy Haddad, now president of Haddad Media, has been named to the Folio: 40. An annual list of magazine industry "influencers and innovators." Haddad is honored for showing "the magazine world that producing compelling video content doesn't have to be an expensive proposition." Hadded is working with Newsweek on their video ventures.

In February, Haddad coordinated a five-hour live Webcast covering the Super Tuesday primaries. It cost $2,000 to produce, and quickly found a sponsor, Dodge. It was streamed by roughly 100,000; they did another one for the so-called Potomac Primaries a week later. Next up for Haddad and Co. is a live Webcast of the Pope's visit to the U.S.-an exclusive Haddad has dubbed a "Popecast."

Amanour_3.22.jpgOn May 1, CNN's God's Warriors will be awarded a 'Television Academy Honor,' a first-of-its-kind award presented by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. The Academy says the documentary, reported by Christiane Amanpour, exemplifies "television with a conscience."

The award is part of the academy's Television Cares Committee, which honors programs that present issues "in a compelling, emotional and insightful way." Warriors is one of nine final recipients chosen from nearly 200 entries.

The highly-rated but controversial three-part, six-hour television event aired across CNN's U.S. and international networks last August. It explored the rise of religious fundamentalism in three faiths: Judaism, Islam and Christianity.

Russert Honored with Newhouse Lifetime Achievement Award

Russert_3.18.jpgNBC's Tim Russert will receive Syracuse University's Fred Dressler Lifetime Achievement Award. The award, presented by the Newhouse School of Public Communications, will be presented to Russert June 23 during the Mirror Awards ceremony at Rockefeller Center's Rainbow Room.

The Mirror Awards honor reporters, editors and teams of writers who "hold a mirror to their own industry for the public's benefit."

"Russert was chosen to receive the Lifetime Achievement Award because, especially in an election year, there are few more important roles for the media than its role in the political process," says Newhouse Dean David M. Rubin. "Russert has questioned candidates-and even the practices of his own profession-for over 20 years."

The Fred Dressler Lifetime Achievement Award is named for the late cable programming executive and Newhouse School Advisory Board chairman.
