Koppel's One-Night-Only on BBC...Or Is It?Gail Shister
A Lancashire lad, Koppel will make his "BBC World News America" debut at 7 p.m. next Wednesday. The ABC expat will analyze the previous day's "Super Tuesday" results, with Matt Frei anchoring. "In the best of all worlds, Ted would be an occasional contributing analyst," says Hartman. Wednesday "is only a one-time deal, of course, but if you're me, you hope it turns into something more." Hartman, exiled EP of Katie Couric's "CBS Evening News," labels Koppel as "one of the smartest, best journalists in America. If he feels like having a little fun and wants to do it again, it would be my dream come true." Dream on, Rome. With Koppel already senior news analyst for NPR and managing editor for the Discovery Channel, we're guessing he's not looking to increase his workload. Then again, Koppel being Koppel, he might surprise us. Particularly since Tom Bettag, his EP and best bud, goes back two decades with Hartman. Thursday Jan 24, 2008

BBCers Brace for CutsFrom The Independent: "The BBC will announce the axing of 2,600 jobs this morning — one in nine of the total staff — risking a wave of industrial action over what is the biggest round of job cuts in the organisation's history." Tuesday Oct 02, 2007
The British Invasion (c. 2007)Time.com's James Poniewozik writes about last night's premiere of BBC World News America. "The newscast, anchored by Matt Frei, kicked off with long reported pieces from Sudan and Burma (a name that the BBC, whether out of habit or charming colonial nostalgia, continues to prefer to Myanmar). It followed with long interview with former Pakistani leader Benazir Bhutto, and another, with Laura Bush, that focused largely on international issues." Thursday Sep 06, 2007
Is This Man Ready For A "Forgiving" American Audience?Gail Shister
What's the bloody difference, Matt Frei? "If I went to the pub and told my friends I was an anchorman, they'd think of the Will Ferrell movie. If I told my American friends I was a presenter, they'd say, 'Presenter of what? Dog shows?'" Frei was named Wednesday as anchor of "BBC World News America," to launch Oct. 1 at 7pm. A BBC correspondent for 21 years — the last five based in Washington — the 43-year-old newsman understands the culture clash between England and the colonies. "Presenting seems like the more obvious word, but maybe we're too literal in Britain," says Frei (pronounced "fry.") "Anchor is slightly more daunting. If an anchor fails, the ship goes adrift." Look for Frei to drift over to the late night circuit, where his speed-of-light wit may provide some competition for NBC's Brian Williams. On whether he got a raise with his promotion: "I'm so devoted to the program, I took a 50 percent cut. I was also given BBC bookends." On joining the BBC at 22 as an opera and theatre critic for its German radio service: "Basically, they were desperate for a young, underpaid member of the slave class. I was the obvious choice." Rome's British AscentGail Shister
Hartman, who left CBS in June to develop and executive produce a U.S.-based newscast for the BBC, says he won't reach out to former colleagues to fill "any highly visible editorial roles." On principle. (Remember those?) "It seems like bad form," says the 25-year CBS veteran. "It feels a little like insider trading to just go and say, 'We know you're good from a previous context and we want to take you away.' "I left CBS on very good terms. I have a million friends there. I want to keep them all." On the other hand, were a CBS correspondent or anchor to hear about an open slot and want to pitch Hartman, "I would be perfectly open to talking to them." (Quick detour: Hartman, formerly EP of Katie Couric's "CBS Evening News," says he has no plans to read Ed Klein's new "tell all" biography of the anchor. "I'm pretty busy.") Tuesday Aug 21, 2007
