Bob Woodruff: First Western Journo Inside N. Korean Nuclear Plant

Bob Woodruff.jpg ABC’s Bob Woodruff, in North Korea along with other U.S. reporters covering the New York Philharmonic’s concert in Pyongyang, became the first Western journalist to go inside the country’s Yongbyon Nuclear Facility, according to ABC News.

Woodruff’s reports from inside Yongbyon aired Friday on Good Morning America and on World News. Further reporting from North Korea will air this weekend and into next week on ABC newscasts.

During his time in the country, Woodruff and his ABC News colleagues have been shadowed by government chaperones. “We always have our government minders with us,” Chuck Lustig, ABC’s director of foreign news coverage, tells Broadcasting & Cable‘s Marisa Guthrie. “They’re always at our side.”

This is Woodruff’s second time reporting from North Korea — his first trip was in 2005.

Related: In a Men’s Vogue profile, Woodruff discusses his recovery from a 2006 brain injury suffered while reporting from Iraq. “The doctors will tell you it’s not a 100 percent recovery,” Woodruff says. “I will never get back my full memory for names and words. It’ll improve over time, and the improvement I’ve had is an absolute miracle, far better than the doctors were expecting.”
