CBS’ Shalev Talks “Chipping Away at That Gap” on the Menu

shalev_6-10.jpgToday on the mediabistro.com Morning Media Menu we’re joined by CBS The Early Show EP Zev Shalev.

We talk about what’s coming up this summer, including a summer concert series on the USS Intrepid that begins Friday with a performance by Lionel Richie and Akon. Also: some big recent interviews. “It’s about creating the right kind of environment,” he said. “We have a team here that is so keen and dedicated to finding those kinds of stories that are going to get people talking so when our team first spotted Susan Boyle, or when the ‘Father Oprah’ story first came up, the trick is just getting on it first.”

But how does we make a push to turn the 3rd place network morning show into a contender? “When we look at that gap it’s shrinking significantly, and really that’s the only way to look at it,” he said. “It’s not going to be one of those things where you can turn it around in one day, but over a period of time, you can start chipping away at that gap.”

Also discussed: big ratings for CBS’ awards shows, big revenue for Craigslist and why “the traditional news network is still the place you can get real journalism.”

Jake Tapper on Pres. Obama’s Recent Trip, Foreign Press

tapper_6-9.jpgABC News senior White House correspondent Jake Tapper joined us on the six-month anniversary of the mediabistro.com Morning Media Menu podcast, a couple days after returning from covering Pres. Obama’s trip overseas. “President Bush did say a lot of the same things when he went to Cairo a year before,” said Tapper, but “President Obama trying to restart the conversation was interesting.”

Tapper weighed in on Chuck Todd‘s new book about the Obama administration. “Anything I learn I’m going to share with the readers of my blog and the viewers of ABC News as soon as I can share them, I’m not saving anything for a book, so I don’t know how that works,” he said. “It’s complicated to have a day job reporting for a media organization and also be working on a book that’s not going to be coming out for years…Chuck is a really smart guy, I’m sure he’ll figure out a way to do this, but for me that would seem a very, very difficult task.”

Tapper has been a current press corps a favorite of some conservatives. “I would think that if John McCain had won, that probably a lot of the people who are complimenting me now would not be complimenting me now,” he said. “I would hope that, anyway.”

Also discussed: How the foreign press has covered Pres. Obama, questions he still hasn’t gotten the answers to from the White House and his thoughts on Twitter interaction.

Ziegler: “Monica Lewinsky Never Dreamed of Doing to Bill Clinton Some of the Things Brian Williams Did to Barack Obama”

ziegler_6-4b.jpgToday on the mediabistro.com Morning Media Menu we were joined by filmmaker John Ziegler. He’s currently touring the country (in Boston today) with his film “Media Malpractice,” about the 2008 presidential election.

What does he thinks of media coverage since Pres. Obama has taken office? “I think the answer is pretty clear, especially over the past 24 hours,” he said. “The speech that he gave this morning in Egypt was just flabbergasting, and of course, as always, is being greeted by 80% of the media as another gift from the Messiah.”

Of NBC’s “Inside the Obama White House” special, Ziegler didn’t mince words. “Monica Lewinsky never dreamed of doing to Bill Clinton some of the things Brian Williams did to Barack Obama during that two-part special,” said Ziegler. “It was beyond glowing.”

Also discussed: plans for his next documentary, what he thought was the worst part of the Couric/Palin interview and whether he purposely says provocative things to draw attention to his films.

He’s currently touring the country with his film “Media Malpractice,” about the 2008 presidential election. We’ll ask him what he thinks of media coverage since Pres. Obama has taken office.

Menu: Thrillist CEO and Mediabistro Circus Speaker Ben Lerer

mmm_2-3.gifToday on the mediabistro.com Morning Media Menu podcast we’re joined by Ben Lerer, CEO of Thrillist.

Lerer has turned Thrillist, an email newsletter geared toward guys, into a brand that covers more than a dozen cities. We talk to him about being a young CEO, and how to make money in these tough economic times. “We want every sentence and everything we write about to feature both some element of service that someone really gets information they can use while at the same time keeping them engaged by being funny,” he said.

He is also a speaker at the Mediabistro Circus, tomorrow and Wednesday in New York City. The panel will “discuss the media business, and how to plan successfully for what’s ahead.” Said Lerer: “I think that one of the big reasons we’ve been successful is we’ve stayed incredibly focused on our core business, and we haven’t gotten distracted…We decided we’d be great at email, and what that’s allowed us to do is be one of the leaders in a space that has a lot of value.”
