60 Minutes Ordered to Turn Over Interview Notes

60Butt_5.13.bmp60 Minutes has been issued an order by the Greater Manchester (UK) Police to hand over notes of interviews with reformed British Jihadist Hassan Butt. Correspondent Bob Simon interviewed Butt for a story that aired in March, 2007.

The Press Gazette (UK) reports that the BBC, the Sunday Times and Prospect magazine have also been "issued with orders under schedule five of the Terrorism Act 2000."

60 Minutes spokesperson Kevin Tedesco tells TVNewser, "We plan to vigorously contest this demand for our unpublished material."

The British network and publications are expected to appear in court later this week in Manchester to oppose the order.

Where's That Katie Couric Billboard?

An emailer writes: hmmm. Just asking: From Sept. 2006 until yesterday hung a billboard on the front of the CBS Broadcast Center promoting the CBS Evening News with Katie Couric. Today, there is nothing there.

Insiders tell TVNewser the billboard was taken down for repairs and cleaning and should be back up by the end of the week.

> More from an emailer: WCBS-TV reported and showed yesterday that the Katie Couric ad came down during yesterday's storms. I'm not sure if they took it down for safety reasons or if it fell but it's definitely weather-related.

> More, more from an insider: Couric billboard came partly undone due to wind and was fully removed for safety reasons. Will be reinstalled by the end of the week.

Couric, McCain and Mom

A behind-the-scenes video of Katie Couric's interview with Sen. John McCain and his mother, Roberta McCain, is up on Couric's YouTube page. After meeting Roberta, who is 96-years-old, Couric says, "I'd like to look like her when I'm fifty-six!" Later, Couric and the presidential nominee talk about his recent Daily Show appearance. The full interview airs tonight on the CBS Evening News:

The Second WaPo/60 Minutes Report to Air Sunday

60wapo_5.9.bmpThe second story from the combined Washington Post/60 Minutes partnership will premiere this Sunday. The investigation, from WaPo reporters Dana Priest, Amy Goldstein and 60's Scott Pelley, uncovers the neglectful conditions and inadequate medical treatment in a U.S. government-run prison system that has caused the deaths of some detainees.

The story is Priest's first as a contributor to 60 Minutes.

The first story, "Evidence of Injustice," was a joint investigation that was recently named the winner of the Sigma Delta Chi Investigative Award. It was broadcast on 60 Minutes Nov. 18, 2007, with a print version appearing in The Washington Post the same day.

Kaplan To Return to Evening News Next Week

First on TVNewser: Insiders tell us Rick Kaplan's days of double duty at CBS News are coming to a close. Kaplan has been acting EP of The Early Show since early March. He's also kept his day job as EP of the CBS Evening News with Katie Couric, though the EN staff has done most of the heavy lifting.

Kaplan's last day at Early will be this Friday. We're told he's going to take a few days off. Meanwhile, insiders tell us CBS execs are looking at internal candidates to fill the Early Show EP vacancy. For the time-being TES newcomer Zev Shalev will oversee the show.

Kaplan_5.7jpg.jpg > More: Kaplan tells TVNewser, "I love my children here on the morning show and I'm happy to get back with my buds at the Evening News." Even though he's officially back Monday, Kaplan still has some unfinished business on TES which he'll take care of early next week. Then he'll take a week off. "I haven't had time off since my hip, and that's not really a vacation," joked Kaplan.

Asked about the future of the Evening News and the possibility his anchor may depart after the election, Kaplan says, "look there are challenges. We'll work our butts off together. There are a lot of things we can do together and we will." Kaplan will also oversee general election coverage which will include the next version of Primary Questions, called Presidential Questions, "When we get down to two candidates," Kaplan said.

And I'm Alec Baldwin, Those Stories And Andy Rooney....

60minutes_5.6.jpg

From 30 Rock to West 57th. Alec Baldwin, who's being profiled this Sunday on 60 Minutes, turned the tables on Morley Safer asking the veteran reporter what it would take to be a correspondent on the CBS News magazine. We're told Safer shot him down, telling the 50-year-old actor: "You're too young."

Back to the AM For Couric?

Couric_5.6.jpg

Well, we suppose it was bound to happen. After weeks of stories about the professional future of Katie Couric, there is now a Gallup poll on the matter. The USA Today/Gallup poll found:

Of 1,016 adults polled by phone April 18-20, 46% said Couric shouldn't be replaced. One quarter of respondents said she should be replaced. CBS declined comment on the poll results...Couric trailed her evening news counterparts, NBC's Brian Williams and ABC's Charles Gibson, in the percentage of viewers who said they watch frequently or occasionally: Williams, 20% frequently, 23% occasionally; Gibson, 17% and 20%; Couric, 13% and 18%.

So where would these 1,016 adults like to see her go?

• 35% said Couric should return to morning news.
• 28% said Couric should be a full-time 60 Minutes correspondent.
• 17% said Couric should succeed CNN interviewer Larry King when he retires.
• 8% think she should be a daytime talk show host.

...Early to Rise

earlyshow_5-2.jpg

(The Early Show weather anchor Dave Price crowd surfing during REO Speedwagon's live concert from Greensburg, Kansas yesterday.)

CBS' The Early Show spent all last week broadcasting from Greensburg, Kansas, a town almost entirely destroyed by a tornado. The anchors helped rebuild the town to be ecologically and economically sustainable. Yesterday, the week ended with an REO Speedwagon performance. All pictures and stories from the week can be found here.

CBS News Producer Accidentally Sends Out Note to Entire Listserv

miller_4-30.jpg

CBS News correspondent Michelle Miller found herself in the middle of an email exchange today that went out to anyone who subscribes to a CBS News listserv. Here's the note:

---------- Forwarded message ----------

From: CBSNews Evening News

Date: Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 2:20 PM

Subject: Michelle Miller

Knows something's up. Sigh.

A web producer accidentally sent the email to anyone who subscribes to the Evening News newsletter listserv. Turns out the producer meant to send the email to an editor to let them know Michelle Miller was going to have to write a post on the Couric & Co. blog about a story she is putting together for tonight's Evening News.

TVNewser was forwarded the email by many people on the listerv. And we hear Miller herself received emails from mystified colleagues about its meaning. We're told the "sigh" is in reference to the overworked nature of the CBS newsroom today (we know you newsers can relate).

The web producer sent out a follow-up email, explaining the gaffe:

-----Original Message-----

From: [Redacted]

Sent: Wed Apr 30 15:02:48 2008

Subject: FW: Please disregard the last message from this address

Our goof. Proving the danger of the mass email list!

Reality TV on The Early Show

Price_CBS_4.28.jpg

A year after a tornado leveled the town of Greensburg, Kansas, CBS' The Early Show has descended on the town to report on the recovery. This morning, weather guy Dave Price reported from inside what was a house. The show will not only broadcast live from the town all week but anchors and staffers will roll up their sleeves to help residents build an eco-friendly playground. Then on Friday, a special concert for the town by REO Speedwagon, including a performance of (no joke) "Ridin' The Storm Out."
