ABC's World News and NBC's Nightly News finished within 100,000 Total Viewers and 50,000 in the A25-54 demo during the month of May, but NBC Nightly News finished first in both categories.

In the demo, ABC and NBC tied in the rating (2.0/8), but NBC finished with more viewers (2,460,000 v. 2,410,000). CBS averaged 1,710,000. It was the fifth time in six sweep periods in which ABC tied or beat NBC in the demo rating.

In Total Viewers, NBC finished first with 8,040,000, ABC had 7,960,000 and CBS totaled 5,620,000. The gap between first and second place was the smallest between the networks since May 1999.
