Exclusives That Aren't

Wednesday Apr 16, 2008

Every Day, a New Exclusive?

This morning on Opening Bell on FBN at 9amET, Alexis Glick interviewed Martin Feldstein, chairman of the Council of Economics Advisers under President Ronald Reagan. The interview was billed as an exclusive.

It was...on April 16. But yesterday afternoon, at 2:40pmET, Erin Burnett interviewed Feldstein on CNBC's Street Signs about his Wall Street Journal op-ed in yesterday's paper. That, of course, was also an "exclusive."

And in Exclusives That Are news — Lee Iacocca is interviewed on FNC's Your World with Neil Cavuto at 4pmET and airs on Cavuto's FBN show as well.

Exclusive! (For Four Minutes...)

As the ECO:nomics conference in Santa Barbara wound down today, the big get was California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger. CNBC touted their "exclusive" with the Governator three times in the hour leading up to the 4:15pmET interview, and it was branded as such during the interview. One problem — just four minutes after he finished his CNBC interview with Maria Bartiromo, Schwarzenegger was interviewed live in California by FBN's Liz Claman.

Today Show's Exclusive Tag Lag

Lara Eustermann was struck by lightening on October 1, putting her in a coma for three weeks. On November 7, Harry Smith of the CBS' The Early Show interviewed Eustermann and her mother. Then this morning, Eustermann was on NBC's Today show, in what was dubbed an "exclusive" interview with Matt Lauer.

What exactly was exclusive about Today's interview? Well, Eustermann's husband was there. Other than that, it looks like a very similar interview.

Heather Mills McCartney Makes The Rounds

From a TVNewser tipster: A promo for GMA's "exclusive" interview with Heather Mills McCartney aired last night during World News and again this morning — the only problem is that Mills McCartney was on all three morning shows today: on CBS' The Early Show and NBC's Today at 7:18amET. Those interviews were pre-taped. Mills McCartney was then on ABC's GMA at 7:31 in her only live interview. NBC and CBS then ran longer excerpts: CBS at 8:06, NBC at 7:38 and 8:09.

Mills McCartney was making the rounds to bash the British tabloids for perpetuating stories about her break-up with Paul McCartney that have led to death threats against her.

We're told both T. Boone Pickens and Wilbur Ross, while booked for CNBC this morning, will be on with Neil Cavuto on his FBN show this evening. First on? yes. Exclusive? not so much.

When Government Video Isn't Exclusive

NBCBorder_927.jpg

Last night, NBC Nightly News reported on a GAO investigation into security along the U.S. - Canada border. That report is to be released today but Brian Williams told viewers, "we have a jump on the story here tonight." Only problem: the same exclusive report was running on the CBS Evening News at the same time.

CBSBorder_926.jpg

...and more than 15 hours later, MSNBC is still branding the video as NBC News Exclusive even though the GAO video has aired on ABC's Good Morning America, too.

First on CNBC? Yes. Exclusive? Not So Much

CNBC_8.23.jpgFNC_8.23.bmp >More: An emailer writes "Maria [Bartiromo] was the only reporter exclusively invited to Countrywide Headquarters in CA for the interview and shot exclusive video on the trading floor of Countrywide. No other cameras had the access that Maria had. When CEOs want to talk - Maria is the one they turn to."

Exclusive For Two Hours?

How can a CNN exclusive at 10:50am be an MSNBC exclusive by 12:52pm?

armitagesept22.jpg

The answer is: it can't.

> Update: 4:38pm: "Exclusive obviously means no other network has this guest on their screen at this exact moment!," an e-mailer jokes...

Six Months Later, Is A Fox/TWC Deal For The Fox Business Channel Still "Imminent?"

Has there ever been a future network talked about more with less insight than the Fox Business Channel?

Six months ago today, the Wall Street Journal's Julia Angwin reported "exclusively" that Fox was in talks with Time Warner Cable and that a deal was "imminent."

Of course, loyal readers know this was immediately dismissed by a TVNewser source who said there was nothing new in her story. "We're surprised the Journal would print a such a non-story, let alone put it on the front page of the Marketplace section," a Fox insider said.

The WSJ story claimed the channel was "slated to launch in the first half of 2006," according to "a person close to the channel." But how close to the channel could this person possibly have been? Angwin appears to have been led astray by her source, since there hasn't been any word in the last six months on the long awaited channel. It leads an e-mailer to wonder: "How long is the statue of limitations on 'imminent?'"

Cooper On NBC, Then CNN, Then MSNBC

Time Magazine's Matt Cooper is making the media rounds now that his grand jury testimony tell-all is hitting newsstands.

On Friday an MSNBC press release said Cooper's "first cable interview" would be with Dan Abrams on Monday evening.

But on the same day, CNN announced that Cooper would join Howard Kurtz for a "one-hour special edition" of Reliable Sources on Sunday morning.

NBC was the real scooper, though: Tim Russert had an "exclusive network interview" with Cooper on Meet the Press this morning...
