‘GMA’ Unveils Social Media ‘Nerve Center’

ABC’s “Good Morning America” this morning unveiled Social Square, a new digital studio that will be the show’s social media “nerve center.”

The studio, which is an addition to the current “GMA” studio in Times Square, features Samsung monitors and tablets that feature Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Google+ and Spotify components. In addition to being used throughout the show, Social Square will also be the home of “GMA Live,” the online broadcast that airs at 9amET on the show’s website.

The unveiling of Social Square comes six months after NBC’s “Today” show debuted its own social media studio, the Orange Room. During a tour of the studio after the show this morning, ABC News senior editor of social media Andrew Springer told TVNewser the planning process for the “GMA” studio was underway before “Today” unveiled its version. Meet the New President of ABC News. He’s 26

Today — and today only — there will be a new President of ABC News.

Ben Sherwood is swapping jobs with ABC’s Senior Social Media Editor Andrew Springer as part of the MVP program ABC News launched earlier this year. Each week a “most value-able player” is chosen and is provided with the opportunity for a job swap, shadow, or other exchange that enables them to see and learn more about another part of ABC News.

Springer was among the first MVPs and he wanted to be the boss. Springer’s fist tasks: ABCNews.com now looks like Buzzfeed and Stephen Colbert will anchor “World News.” (We kid.)

“He may only be 26 years old, but Andrew is a great mentor,” says Sherwood. “Today is exciting and a little nerve-racking because I know that I will have a much tougher time filling his sneakers than he mine.”

Springer led ABC’s morning editorial call and later this afternoon Sherwood will give a presentation on ABC’s performance on Facebook to the digital team.

Says Springer: “You gotta love working in an organization that is open to having the President switch jobs with the Senior Social Editor for a day.”

Leadership Changes At ABC News Digital

ABC News Digital announced a number of changes to its leadership team today. Laiea Smith, who had been managing editor for ABC News Digital since October 2010, will be leaving the company. With the move Eric Noe has been promoted to managing editor, he started at the company in 2004 as a general assignment reporter.

Ali Gazan has been promoted to head of lifestyle, which will include GoodMorningAmerica.com (which she already manages) as well as the entertainment, travel and lifestyle verticals of ABCNews.com.

John Shehata, the head of SEO, will be expanding his duties with the company, while Andrew Springer has been promoted to senior editor of social media, and Katie Moisse has been promoted to health editor.
