How Cable News Covered Michael Brown’s Funeral, Al Sharpton’s Eulogy

Sharpton BrownThis afternoon, cable news covered the funeral of 18-year-old Michael Brown as one of MSNBC’s hosts continued being part of the story.

MSNBC was the only channel to air Al Sharpton‘s eulogy, dipping into it at 12:44pmET. “Order says that children bury their parents…we should not sit here today and act like we’re watching something that is in order,” Sharpton said to rousing chants from the crowd gathered at a St. Louis church.

MSNBC took Sharpton’s eulogy for 11 minutes before Chris Matthews, filling in for Andrea Mitchell, wrapped the noon eastern hour. Ronan Farrow opened his show speaking with Craig Melvin about his interview with Brown’s parents, but showing a full screen of Sharpton’s speech while Melvin reported.

During Sharpton’s eulogy, Fox News continued with its “Outnumbered” panel, who discussed topics ranging from James Foley‘s beheading to what time school should start for teens. At 1pmET, “Happening Now” opened airing images of Sharpton speaking live, then turning to Garrett Tenney outside the church. CNN aired Don Lemon interviewing CNN political commentator LZ Granderson and CNN contributor Donna Brazile. Ashleigh Banfield closed “Legal View” airing parts of Lemon’s interview with the mothers of Michael Brown, Trayvon Martin, and Sean Bell.

During Sharpton’s eulogy, Fox News’ Howard Kurtz tweeted about his statements. And this morning, Don Lemon tweeted–about not tweeting. Read more

Responding to News Blogs ‘Not Of Interest’ to Chris Matthews

MatthewsApparently, engaging with news blogs aren’t high on Chris Matthews‘ priority list.

Asked to respond to a piece written by Vox’s Max Fisher on U.S. airstrikes in Iraq, Matthews didn’t mince words. “I don’t respond to that kind of stuff, OK, that’s not of interest to me; why would I respond to something like that?” Matthews said Friday to guest host Jonathan Capehart. “Let me deal with the grown ups, let me deal with the political people, and not getting involved with the blogs and the websites…I don’t need to respond to that professionally.”  It should be noted that the editor-in-chief of the website Matthews declined to respond to is MSNBC policy analyst Ezra Klein.

Megyn Kelly is ‘Not Ideological,’ Won’t Be Fed ‘Incoherent Tripe’

megyn kelly kelly file 5Politico profiles “red hot” Megyn Kelly and takes the temperature of both personal supporters of Kelly’s and vehement detractors of Fox News.

  • First Look Media’s Glenn Greenwald: “She has a lower tolerance for being fed incoherent tripe from her own side than the average cable news TV host.”
  • Fmr. Fox News contributor Jane Hall: “She clearly often has a point of view, but somehow she manages to show independence and be seen as someone who is not ideological and hitting the same talking points that you see on some of the other prime-time shows.”
  • MSNBC host Chris Matthews: “I think [the Rove incident] was the first big sign, at least to me, that she was going to be a journalist… that she was going to use journalistic standard in covering the election. I think that struck a lot of people.”
  • WJLA General Manager Bill Lord: “I think she’s tried to stay — as best you can in the Fox environment — pretty much in the middle of the political spectrum.”
  • The Loudest Voice in the Room author Gabe Sherman: “I think she wants to maintain her credibility so that when Roger [Ailes] is out of the picture at Fox, she could jump to CNN or another network. She doesn’t want to get marginalized as right wing.”

Let’s Play Hardball…in Canada?

MSNBC’s “Hardball with Chris Matthews” is known for a no-nonsense approach to politics, but Funny or Die’s Canadian spoof of the show probably falls into the opposite category.

In a video posted today, the comedy site debuts its “Hardball” Canada version. A Canadian maple leaf replaces the NBC peacock on-screen and a cast of comedians mockingly play Matthews, Ann Coulter, actress Kathleen Turner, embattled Toronto Mayor Rob Ford, and the hit Canadian indie/pop duo of Tegan and Sara. “Frankly, like most people, I know nothing about Canada…” faux Matthews says to open the show.

Howard Kurtz: Folks at MSNBC Not Getting ‘Thrill Up the Leg’ Anymore for Obama

KurtzOn the O’Reilly Factor last night, Howard Kurtz suggested MSNBC is no longer favoring President Obama.

“Even the folks at MSNBC not getting the thrill up the leg anymore,” Kurtz said, referencing Chris Matthews‘ now infamous “thrill up my leg” sound bite from 2008. “And the liberal commentators, they’re disillusioned, they’re bummed, they’re depressed, they need medication…this is their guy.”

O’Reilly disagreed about MSNBC: “I haven’t seen that on MSNBC. They still either avoid the issue or throw out rank propaganda.”
