Howard Kurtz: Folks at MSNBC Not Getting ‘Thrill Up the Leg’ Anymore for Obama

KurtzOn the O’Reilly Factor last night, Howard Kurtz suggested MSNBC is no longer favoring President Obama.

“Even the folks at MSNBC not getting the thrill up the leg anymore,” Kurtz said, referencing Chris Matthews‘ now infamous “thrill up my leg” sound bite from 2008. “And the liberal commentators, they’re disillusioned, they’re bummed, they’re depressed, they need medication…this is their guy.”

O’Reilly disagreed about MSNBC: “I haven’t seen that on MSNBC. They still either avoid the issue or throw out rank propaganda.”

Former Employees Mark 20th Anniversary of ‘America’s Talking’

america's talking logoPage Six reports several former employees of “America’s Talking” — MSNBC’s predecessor launched by Roger Ailes featuring Chris Matthews, Steve Doocy and others — recently gathered to mark the 20th anniversary of the channel’s launch:

Last Saturday night, several dozen of the 277 former employees gathered for a 20th anniversary at Social Bar in Midtown Manhattan. The all-talk channel blazed trails in online interactivity and viewing audience participation before NBC dumped it to give Microsoft a content platform.

“It was like television school for me,” said [Bill] McCuddy, now a voice-over talent and movie critic on NY1. Others in the room went on to producing and directing careers on CNN, Al Jazeera and HGTV.

“None of us would be here without Roger Ailes,” McCuddy said.“Now we have to wrap this party up because MSNBC is taking it over in 10 minutes.”

Chris Matthews Thinks Megyn Kelly is ‘Great,’ Colbert Calls Her a ‘Left Wing Loon’

Reaction continues to Megyn Kelly‘s interview with Dick Cheney: pundits, comedians and even hosts at rival networks are weighing in on Kelly’s confrontation of the former VP.

“I think Megyn Kelly is great,” Chris Matthews said on “Morning Joe” Thursday (watch after the jump). “I think when she stood up to him, and stood up to Karl Rove on election night, she keeps earning her spurs as a journalist. He thought he was walking into a big kiss.” Matthews also praised the interview on “Hardball” last night, saying Kelly gave Cheney “a wind-up that should have flattened him right from the start.”

The interview also got some play — albeit with a little more snark — on Comedy Central last night:

Peter Doocy: Dad Steve is ‘My Behind-the- Scenes Career Counselor’

steve and peter doocyFox News anchor Steve Doocy and his son, Fox News correspondent Peter Doocy, talk to NJ.com about what it’s like to work at the same network:

Remembering how Peter was still in college when he participated in MSNBC’S Chris Matthews’ Hardball College Tour, Steve states “…my wife Kathy and I encouraged Peter to pursue either an MBA or a law degree but…(Peter) was selected to ask John McCain a town hall question. Peter phrased it in a hilarious way that got McCain and the 5000 in attendance laughing, and made political headlines.”

Soon after, Peter became a junior reporter and he believes that “I’m able to concentrate on what I’m doing with the benefit of having him as my behind-the-scenes career counselor. He’s already made all the rookie mistakes you can make on TV and he makes sure I don’t follow in those footsteps.”

May 2014 Ratings: MSNBC Reclaims #2

With the search for Malaysian Air Flight 370 dying down, MSNBC reclaimed the outright second-place spot on the cable news leaderboard in May, besting CNN in both total day and primetime. But the network hit a series of seven-year lows in both total day and primetime this month.

The ratings for May 2014 (Nielsen Live + Same Day data):

  • Primetime (Mon-Sun): 536,000 Total Viewers / 153,000 A25-54
  • Total Day (Mon-Sun): 327,000 Total Viewers / 103,000 A25-54

Like its competitors, MSNBC was down compared to May 2013: the network was down -5% in total viewers and -10% in the A25-54 demographic in total day and -1% and -13%, respectively, in primetime. MSNBC was down the least of all the cable news networks for the month.

In total day, MNSBC delivered its lowest ratings in total viewers since December 2007 and in the A25-54 demo since June 2006. In primetime, the network had its lowest demo delivery since July 2006.

In primetime, “All In with Chris Hayes” and “The Rachel Maddow Show” were both up in total viewers but down in the demo compared to the same month last year: Hayes’ program was up +6% in total viewers and down -13% in the demo and Maddow’s program was up +3% and down -16%, respectively. “The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell” was down -16% in total viewers and-12% in the A25-54 demo.

It was also a mixed bag for MSNBC’s early evening programming. “The Ed Show” and “Politics Nation” were both down in total viewers but up in the demo. They were the only two cable news shows to grow in the 5pmET and 6pmET timeslots. At 7pmET, “Hardball with Chris Matthews” was up in total viewers but down in the demo.

“Morning Joe” reclaimed the second-place spot among the cable news morning shows for the month, growing +13% in total viewers and +39% in the demo compared to May 2013.

That Time ‘Chris Matthews’ Appeared as a Guest…on Fox News?

A funny moment on Fox News this afternoon when two of TV news’ Chris’ got momentarily confused for one another.

“Alright Chris Matthews, helping us do the math there out of Washington…Chris thank you,” Jon Scott said while wrapping a segment on “Happening Now.”

“Well, Chris Wallace, but close enough,” a laughing Wallace said.

“Boy…you don’t even look like him,” Scott added. “Thank God,” Wallace responded.
