Cafferty Reads Email Comparing Limbaugh and Hannity to KKK

cafferty_12-15.jpgDuring his Cafferty File segment on Friday CNN’s Jack Cafferty asked viewers: “Should Republicans stop listening to Rush Limbaugh?”

Newsbusters reports Cafferty referred to the radio host as “that gasbag Limbaugh,” while referencing comments made by Colin Powell last week during an interview with CNN’s Fareed Zakaria.

While reading viewer emails after the initial set-up, all of which were anti-Limbaugh, he relayed a very serious charge from “Connie in Chicago.” Cafferty read:

Yes! Limbaugh is a far-right agitator of the worst sort with a 1950′s mentality of what values 21st century America should reflect. I expect him and other like-minded Sean Hannitys of the world to step out of their closet and display their white sheets and dunce caps. Limbaugh is a bad joke.

Interestingly, the graphic on the screen only displayed the first two sentences of the email.

Carol Cafferty Remembered

Jack Cafferty was not on The Situation Room on Friday for The Cafferty Files, because his wife of 35 years, Carol Cafferty, passed away that morning. “Carol was everything to Jack,” said Wolf Blitzer. See The Situation Room’s tribute to Carol:

Dobbs Finds Cafferty Question “Amusing”

dobbs_8-21.JPGYesterday’s Cafferty Files during The Situation Room found Jack Cafferty asking, “In light of the tightening polls, does Barack Obama now have to go negative against John McCain?”

As Newsbusters writes, it appears Lou Dobbs took umbrage with the implication Obama hadn’t already gone negative.

Just a few hours after the segment, around 7:10pmET on Lou Dobbs Tonight, Dobbs said, “There was a question on this network earlier today whether or not — asking whether or not — viewers believed that Senator Obama should go on the attack to improve his standing against Senator McCain. The implication being that he hadn’t already. I found that amusing, if I may say.”

The Ticker (p.m. edition): Turner, Olympics, Cafferty…

> Despite net income falling 26% in 2Q, Time Warner’s Turner division, which includes CNN & Headline News, delivered an 11% increase in ad sales. TVWeek reports Time Warner CEO Jeff Bewkes says the unit outperformed expectations “given the economic conditions.”

> Joe Scarborough isn’t afraid to poke a little fun at NBC’s $1 billion investment. Newsbusters watched as Scarborough joked, “Are the tanks still there?” and coughed repeatedly. “We’re going to get a phone call,” said co-host Mika Brzezinski. And because the show was only 90-minutes today (Olympic soccer took over at 7:30amET), Scarborough and Brzezinski had extra time for lunch.

> In today’s New York Observer cover story on the games, Cox Newspapers Asia bureau chief Craig Simons talks about how Jack Cafferty‘s “goons and thugs” comment still reverberates. A Beijing cabbie asked Simons if he worked for CNN. “Mr. Simons said he did not. The cabbie declared that he would have refused to carry him if he had.”

Now Cafferty Takes A Stand

First MSNBC’s Mika Brzezinski refused to read, tried to burn, then shredded her script regarding the release of Paris Hilton from jail, now CNN’s Jack Cafferty is trying to take the high road on celebrity news, too. And, as in Brzezinski’s case, the on-air refusal is making international news.
