Barbara Cochran Inducted into SPJ Hall of Fame

Cochran_6.12.jpgRTDNA President Emeritus Barbara Cochran will be inducted into the Washington, D.C., Pro chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists Hall of Fame during a ceremony Tuesday in Washington.

Cochran, wife of ABC Newsman John Cochran, will be honored along with Westwood One radio host Jim Bohannon, Washingtonian Magazine Editor-at-Large, Jack Limpert and former Newsweek magazine Washington Bureau Chief Mel Elfin at the D.C. Pro Chapter’s annual Dateline Awards dinner.

“I’m very honored to be included with this group in the SPJ Hall of Fame,” Cochran said. “It has been a privilege to represent so many electronic journalists in their battles for First Amendment rights.”

Cochran, former VP and Washington Bureau Chief for CBS News and Executive Producer of NBC’s “Meet the Press,” was the head of RTNDA — as it was known then — from 1997 to 2009.

The 2009 NAB Show/RTNDA conference is underway in Las Vegas this week. And like so many other out-of-town events, the dismal economy is taking a bite out of attendance – down 20% from last year. Last year 105,259 attended. This year there are 83,842 registered attendees.

NewscastStudio.com is covering the NAB show at the convention center as well as the annual RTNDA confab in the adjoining Hilton hotel.

Outgoing RTNDA president Barbara Cochran, wife of ABC News correspondent John Cochran was presented two awards yesterday: an NAB Recognition Award for her 12 years of service to the Radio & TV News Directors Association and RTNDA’s John F. Hogan Award for Distinguished Service. More in the press release after the jump

Barbara Cochran to Step Down from RTNDA

Cochran.jpgLongtime president of the Radio-Television News Directors Association, Barbara Cochran, is retiring from the organization next year. Cochran joined the RTNDA in 1997 from CBS News, where she was Washington bureau chief.

“I’m honored to have had the privilege of leading this historic organization and speaking out on behalf of electronic journalists for the past 12 years,” Cochran said in a press release. Cochran is married to ABC News correspondent John Cochran.

Highlights of Cochran’s tenure include the conclusion of the RTNDA’s battle to abolish the FCC’s Fairness Doctrine, and, upon the request of the RTNDA and others, immediate access to the audio recordings of the Supreme Court arguments in Bush v. Gore — the 2000 presidential election case.
