Terry McCarthy Jumps from ABC to CBS

McCarthy_6.27.jpgTVNewser has learned ABC News correspondent Terry McCarthy is leaving the network for a job at CBS News. In an email to colleagues, obtained by TVNewser, McCarthy writes, "Has been a lot of fun working with you all over the past three years, even as our industry is changing so quickly all around us. Who knows where we will all be in the next three years!"

McCarthy was ABC's principal Iraq correspondent. He has reported extensively overseas, from China, India and other parts of the Middle East. Before ABC, McCarthy worked for Time magazine in Los Angeles. It was former ABCer, now CBS's VP for talent and development Barbara Fedida who helped McCarthy transition from print to TV three years ago.

He'll be based at the CBS News bureau in Los Angeles but continue to
cover international news.

"No Job Is 'Safe'...Including Mine"

"For several years, I've reported on the changes sweeping our newsrooms," writes ShopTalk/TVSPY.com editor Tom Petner today. "No one is immune. No job is 'safe'...including mine."

Petner's full-time editing job is being eliminated to cut costs, according to former MSNBC President Erik Sorenson, CEO of ShopTalk/TVSPY parent company Vault.com. He says "it is not a decision I am taking lightly because [Tom] has been terrific..."

Instead, Petner's "duties will be spread around to an internal team", with Andrew Gauthier as "point man", effective next Monday. Sorenson says he contemplated selling TVSPY, ShopTalk, and message boards Water Cooler and Sandbox. "But...I've decided to keep it all going but with a lower cost base."

David Cohen Joins mediabistro as Editor of WebNewser

Our search for a new TVNewser editor has also led us to a new top editor for WebNewser. Starting today, David Cohen joins the mediabistro.com blog network as editor of WebNewser.com. David comes to us with more than 13 years of experience at Reed Business including serving in several editorial roles at Multichannel News. Most recently, David was deputy editor of digital media for Multichannel and its sister publication Broadcasting & Cable.

He'll bring a wealth of reporting experience and analytical insight to this growing news site which covers the convergence of old and new media -- The News about Web News.

And if nothing else, the guy's persistent -- he sat through the 5 1/2 hour rain delay at Yankee Stadium the other night.
