John Dickerson has been named CBS News Political Analyst and Contributor, it was announced today by Sean McManus, President, CBS News and Sports. In this capacity, Dickerson will provide on-air political analysis and contribute to CBS News broadcasts across the network. He joins the unrivaled CBS political analysis team of Bob Schieffer and Jeff Greenfield. His appointment is effective immediately.

"We're delighted to have John become a member of the incomparable CBS News political analysis team," said McManus. "John's distinctive insights and his ability to analyze and explain political complexities will be great assets to CBS News and our viewers."

John Dickerson is Slate magazine's Chief Political Correspondent. He also is author of On Her Trail, a Simon and Schuster book about his mother, the late Nancy Dickerson, a pioneering newswoman who, in 1960, became CBS News' first female correspondent.

Prior to joining Slate, Dickerson covered politics for 12 years for TIME magazine. The last four years he was the magazine's White House correspondent, writing extensively on Bush administration policies and political strategy. Dickerson interviewed George W. Bush five times since his election in 2000. In 2004, the Washington Post wrote about his talent for asking questions: "The master of the game is John Dickerson of TIME magazine, who has knocked Bush off script so many times that his colleagues have coined a term for cleverly worded, seemingly harmless, but incisive questions: "Dickersonian." The cover story he co-wrote on Karl Rove was included in The Best Political Stories of 2003.

During the 2000 presidential election, Dickerson covered John McCain, co-writing several cover stories on the Arizona Senator, and wrote at length on Republican candidate George W. Bush throughout the general campaign season. At the end of the contentious Florida election recount, he reported and wrote the cover story naming George W. Bush TIME's "Person of the Year" after spending an afternoon with the future president at his Texas ranch.

Previously, Dickerson covered Capitol Hill, reporting on the Gingrich Congress, the House impeachment proceedings and the Senate trial of President Clinton. Before covering Congress, Dickerson wrote about economics, providing analysis on entitlements, the budget process and taxes. During the 1996 national election, he covered the campaigns of Bob Dole, Lamar Alexander and Steve Forbes.

Dickerson also has written for the New York Times, Washington Post and Men's Vogue. He is a regular panelist on PBS' Washington Week in Review and has appeared on The Today Show, NBC Nightly News, CBS EVENING NEWS, ABC World News Tonight, Face the Nation, Meet the Press, Good Morning America, This Week, PBS' News Hour, Nightline, Larry King Live and the BBC.

A native Washingtonian, Dickerson graduated with distinction from the University of Virginia with a degree in English. He is married and has two children.
