Twitter has unveiled the top 10 most retweeted tweets in its fourth installment of Twitter 2010, Year in Review. The number one spot goes to comedian extraordinaire Stephen Colbert for a single tweet about the Gulf Oil spill, and for this tweet Colbert got the first ever Golden Tweet Award, presented to him last night on the Colbert Report from Biz Stone himself. We’ve got the winning tweet, and the others who made it into the top ten, below.
Colbert’s tweet was topical, and dealt with the number one trend of the year: the Gulf Oil spill. You can read the tweet below:
So why was this the most retweeted tweet of 2010? We think there’s four reasons: Colbert’s celebrity status gives him a wide reach, the tweet is funny and not (too) offensive, it’s part of the most talked about topic on Twitter this year, and it is also about Twitter – something that surely went over well with fellow tweeters.
Aside from Colbert, the vast majority of top retweeted Twitter users are musicians: Drizzy Drake came in second place, Lil Wayne third, and Justin Bieber fourth. Then, Joe Jonas takes the sixth spot, Lady Gaga’s in seventh, Kanye West is eighth and Rhianna is ninth.
In between the musicians, the spoof account alqaeda took fifth place and Sh*tmydadsays came in at number ten.
