Did you know that teenybopper music superstar (and worldwide global irritant) Justin Bieber has more followers on Twitter than the entire population of Canada?
Yep. Bieber’s more than 36 million Twitter fans means that essentially everybody from the Canadian’s homeland has signed up to be a willing participant in the Terminator-like unstoppable rampage of the pint-sized monstrosity, with a couple of million extra folks from around the globe thrown in on top.
It’s easy to be cynical, but social platforms such as Twitter, Facebook and YouTube have revolutionised the world of celebrity, providing the tools for people like Bieber to reach and leverage a huge audience, and allowing the already-famous to engage with – and reap the rewards from – hundreds of millions of fans around the world. Many of whom, thankfully, come armed with a credit card. And very low expectations.
