Whichever way you want to look at it, 2012 was a very big year.

So what else were we talking about in 2012?

Perfect Tweets, The Twitter Below, Road House, TweetRank & Malcolm Gladwell (Best Of Twittercism 2010)

When I first started writing this article I had originally planned to list my ten favourite articles on Twittercism in 2010. As I started to put the post together I found that ten wasn’t enough. I know this statement has ‘monster ego’ written all over it, and to some extent that’s 100 per cent accurate, but if you’re a fellow blogger or a writer then you’ll know how it feels when you’re asked to edit or be selective about your own content, even if it’s an instruction from yourself. It’s hard.

Yes, I wrote all of these pieces. But they feel like my babies.

So, I compromised, and kept in everything I thought was pretty good, and separated all the posts into categories.

Revealed: The 10 Most Powerful Tweets Of 2010 (According To Twitter)

Twitter has unveiled another section to its Year In Review – their picks of the 10 most powerful tweets of 2010.

From a cry for help in the woods to a call for aid for a nation, the Most Powerful Tweets tell ten different stories about Twitter’s value in people’s daily lives. At the top of the Most Powerful Tweets list, journalist Ann Curry used Twitter to gain permission for a Doctors Without Borders plane to land in Haiti to assist the earthquake victims. Other powerful moments: The White House connected to Russian President Dmitry Medvedev on Twitter, an injured triathlete used Twitter to save her own life, a parody account defined the discussion about the Gulf Oil Spill, and the Ecuadorian government used Twitter to declare a state of emergency.

To choose the Top Ten Most Powerful Tweets, the Twitter team reviewed Tweets, news stories and international events from the past year. With more than 25 billion Tweets sent in 2010, narrowing the list to just ten Tweets was a huge challenge. The final selections represent the dynamic ways that people use Twitter in the political world, for disaster relief, and to add commentary to news events, sports and entertainment.

Alan Davies, Michael Jackson, iJustine And Mikeyy – The Top 10 Most Popular Twittercism Posts Of 2009

I plan to do a couple of ‘best of’ posts before the year is out, but first I’d like to have a look at the top ten most popular posts on Twittercism this year, and why.

So, in reverse order, here’s the countdown…

10. CHART: @iJustine’s Plateau Reveals The True Benefits Of Being On The Twitter Suggested User List

Written back in June, this article is one of those ‘long tail’ posts that keeps getting return interest from visitors to this blog, search engines and Twitter itself. And perhaps rightly so, as it (in my opinion) clearly illustrates the benefits of being added to Twitter’s controversial suggested users list (SUL).

The debate in the comments thread was fairly heated, involving noted tech gurus Tim Reilly, Robert Scoble and Dave Winer, as well as the Guardian’s technology editor Charles Arthur, and many others. What’s of interest is, I think, that it really seems to be those on the list who defend it, and tend to describe its benefits as negligible. (This of course works both ways.)

It’s worth noting that not too long after this article was written, iJustine was re-added to the SUL, and now boasts over one million followers.

There’s been talk that there are plans to scrap the list in the new year, and I for one welcome this move, as long as it isn’t replaced by something that is even more insular and contrived.

9. Alan Davies And Stephen Fry: When Celebrities Fail At Twitter

I wrote this article in November after watching Alan Davies go completely off the deep-end when Stephen Fry announced, somewhat foolishly, that he was going to ‘give up on Twitter’, after another user dared to suggest that he might be a little bit boring.
