Twitter has confirmed it is testing a tool to automatically translate tweets using Microsoft’s Bing search engine.
Here’s what the functionality, currently available for only select users, looks like.
Pre-translation – notice the gray “View translation” text:
The translate option is only available on individual tweet pages, not on a Twitter user’s timeline.
Certain browsers, including Chrome, already offer page translation that extends to translating tweets. But an official tweet translate button from Twitter would extend across not just all browsers, but devices as well.
The feature is said to be rolling out slowly in select markets and with translation features for Spanish, Italian and German language tweets, to begin with. Twitter also incorporated the translate feature in the updated Windows Phone Twitter app last week.
Is a tweet translation tool something you’d be happy to see incorporated into your Twitter experience? Share your thoughts in the comments.
