Another Day, Another High-Profile Twitter Hack: E! Online

The Syrian Electronic Army, the group behind the April 23 hacking of the Associated Press Twitter account, and more recently CBS, hacked into the E! Online profile on Saturday.

The hackers tweeted a fake “exclusive” allegedly from Justin Bieber announcing that he was gay, which prompted more than 1,000 retweets and more than 350 favorites.

Another tweet said Selena Gomez, Bieber’s erstwhile girlfriend, was supportive of his declaration. The SEA also sent a tweet averring that Angelina Jolie told E! that “Jordan is to blame for the Syrian refugees’ atrocious conditions.”

Some Twitter hacks are funny (see: Burger King), some are decidedly not (see: the AP tweeting that Barack Obama had been injured in a White House bombing).

There’s nothing to be done in the short term for those of us layman Twitter users, but hopefully Twitter will at least be unveiling two-step authentication soon, which will add an extra layer of security to accounts.

In the meantime: be careful what you click. And what you believe on first tweet.
