Who’s Using Twitter In South Africa? [INFOGRAPHIC]

Twitter is a global phenomenon. While New York might have the most Twitter users out of all the big cities in the world, the Netherlands is the top tweeting country with 26.8 percent of its population signed up. And Twitter is especially popular in Japan, Brazil, and Indonesia, too.

But Twitter’s global penetration doesn’t stop at just these countries. This infographic takes a look at how South Africans are using Twitter, what they’re talking about, and how much of the conversation they dominate.

South Africans are an active bunch on Twitter, but they haven’t made it into the list of top Twitter cities just yet.

There are 1.1 million South Africans registered on Twitter, and just under half – 405,000 – are active. This tracks well to Twitter’s overall number of users, with approximately 100 million active users to its roughly 200 million total accounts.

And these users are pretty chatty. They’re sending an average of 80 tweets every minute! This calculates out to about 3,470,000 tweets every month sent by South African users.

They’re chatting about a wide variety of topics, too, ranging from blogging and online marketing to entertainment news and music.
