Man Sent to Prison for Pirating X-Men Film

Let Gilberto Sanchez be an example as to why pirating Hollywood films is a bad, bad idea.

The 49-year-old from the Bronx, New York, was sentenced to a year in prison by U.S. District Court Judge Margaret M. Morrow for pirating an incomplete “workprint” copy of X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

Sanchez uploaded the film a month before it hit theaters to MegaUpload.com in March 2009. This wasn’t his first offense with pirating as he had been uploading films for four years, according to the Justice Department.

“The federal prison sentence handed down in this case sends a strong message of deterrence to would-be Internet pirates,” said United States Attorney André Birotte Jr. “The Justice Department will pursue and prosecute persons who seek to steal the intellectual property of this nation.”
