Condé Nast Fooled Into Paying Eight Million to Scammer

Staffers at Condé Nast apparently need to read emails more carefully, because Forbes is reporting it paid a total of $8 million to a scammer who sent one single note to the company.

According to court documents, last November Condé Nast received an email from someone claiming to be Condé’s magazine publishing company, Quad/Graphics. The email asked Condé to send payments to a bank account number, and because somehow no one at Condé thought, “Hey, I should check this out,” the company began sending payments to the fake account.

Luckily for Condé Nast, the real Quad/Graphics started asking why it wasn’t being paid, thus raising red flags in Condé, and it was able to freeze the payments before they were withdrawn by the scammer.

Lesson learned? Read carefully before sending millions of dollars to people, even if they sound nice.
