The Greening of The Huffington Post

We thought we were done with Arianna Huffington for the day, but then Willow Bay, Huff Po's senior editor in charge of "non-political content" returned our call and we just had to discuss today's announcement of HuffPost Green, a new addition to The Huffington Post done in partnership with TreeHugger and Planet Green.

The site, which those of you who click on the link above will notice, is not yet live (June 4 is the official launch) so we inquired as to why the announcement came today. "I don't know," Bay said. "Part of it was to preview, but there's no reason it was specifically today." So much for our hopes of a diabolical PR campaign.

HuffPost Green "will focus on eco news and trends — from style and eco-conscious celebrities to green lifestyle tips and the latest scientific findings and expert analysis," according to a release. "Environmental issues have always been in Huff Po's DNA," Bay said to explain why breaking the content into its own vertical made sense.

The area will function similarly to the site's other verticals such as politics, media, business, living and entertainment, and have its own, currently unnamed, editor who will start next week. The Huffington Post's environmental columnist Olivia Zaleski will play a role in curating content, as well. Bloggers from TreeHugger, Planet Green and The Huffington Post will round out the content and Bay says she is recruiting writers.

It always seemed to us that Arianna launched the politically minded HuffPo at the perfect time and it wouldn't surprise us if we were saying the same thing about this section a year or three down the road.

Full release after the jump.

The Huffington Post Launches Green Section in Partnership with
Discovery Communications' TreeHugger and Planet Green

"HuffPost Green" To Feature Sophisticated, Accessible Green Content

New York, NY, May 28 — The Huffington Post (www.huffingtonpost.com), a leading news and opinion site, is launching "HuffPost Green" (www.huffingtonpost.com/green), a new section on the site offering green content in partnership with Discovery Communication's TreeHugger, the popular sustainability media outlet, and Planet Green, Discovery's 24-hour eco-lifestyle television network. With content from TreeHugger, Planet Green and The Huffington Post, HuffPost Green will be a trusted source for daily green news and opinion and will serve as a practical guide for living in a more environmentally-friendly way. HuffPost Green will feature up-to-the-minute news stories and features, blog posts, video and community forums. The section is the latest content "vertical" to be added to The Huffington Post, which continues its expansion as "The Internet Newspaper."

"The Huffington Post is thrilled to launch HuffPost Green in partnership with two of the premier 'green' media brands — Discovery's TreeHugger and Planet Green," said Arianna Huffington, editor-in-chief and co-founder of The Huffington Post. "Ever since we launched, environmental issues have been a significant part of HuffPost's focus. Our users have been eager for a go-to destination for the smartest and most useful green content — and with the help of TreeHugger and Planet Green, that's exactly what we'll be offering."

"As one of the most respected news and opinion destinations on the web, The Huffington Post is an ideal partner to help TreeHugger and Planet Green engage and inspire new audiences," said Eileen O'Neill, President and General Manager, Planet Green. "The combination of The Huffington Post's platform, TreeHugger's reputation and reach in the green space and Planet Green's unique content, make HuffPost Green a great resource for a broad spectrum of users."

HuffPost Green will focus on eco news and trends — from style and eco-conscious celebrities to green lifestyle tips and the latest scientific findings and expert analysis. The section will also feature advice on sustainable investing and highlight eco-friendly businesses and sustainable business sectors such as renewable energy, green building, recycling and organics.

TreeHugger will provide its blend of timely blog postings, video features, news items, and forums where users can interact. Planet Green will contribute highlights of its original green lifestyle programming — content which is relevant and accessible to people of all ages and backgrounds. HuffPost editors will infuse this green content with the smart, sharp attitude for which The Huffington Post is known.
