Newsweek/Daily Beast Names Michael Moynihan Editorial Director of ‘Beast Weekend’

Newsweek/The Daily Beast has promoted Michael Moynihan to editorial director of “Beast Weekend,” which will launch this fall. According to a memo from Tina Brown, Beast Weekend will offer readers content that caters to a Saturday/Sunday mind. “Beast Weekend will refresh and refocus our weekend content towards culture as well as longer reads,” explained Brown.

Moynihan has been with Newsweek/The Daily Beast since September of last year. He most recently served as cultural news editor.

Below is the full note from Brown.

I’m thrilled to announce the promotion of Michael Moynihan to the position of Editorial Director of the new Beast Weekend, which is in the works for a fall launch along with our new-look homepage update. Beast Weekend will refresh and refocus our weekend content towards culture as well as longer reads. Michael will also play a more day-to-day role in the newsroom, assisting Executive Editor John Avlon and Managing Editors Paula Szuchman and Adam Auriemma with story selection and assignments at the morning editorial board meeting.

Michael has established himself as a respected and provocative voice at The Daily Beast since he joined us in September, 2012. Some of his recent juggernaut pieces include his Newsweek cover story “You’re Being Hacked”, his deep dive into the murky world of online jihadists and most recently, his reporting on the UKObserver’s NSA cover story. During his time as Managing Editor of Vice, Michael helped reinforce its edgy brand and revenue-generating content, including in the video arena. He will play a similar role going forward at The Daily Beast, reporting to John.

Please join me in celebrating this well-deserved promotion of Michael Moynihan to Editorial Director of Beast Weekend.

Best,

Tina
