US crime reporting site Homicide Watch DC has exceeded its target of $40,000 on Kickstarter, which will be used to help run a "student reporting lab" as a way of ensuring the continuation of the site for the next year.

Newspapers Get $1 in New Digital Ad Revenue for Every $25 in Print Ad Revenue Lost (Poynter)
The newspaper industry's effort to cover print advertising losses with digital ad gains, weak in 2010 and 2011, deteriorated further in the first half of this year. Newspaper Association of America advertising statistics show $798 million in print losses for the first half of 2012 compared to the same period a year ago.

Ken Lerer's CNN-Killer Hires a CNN Veteran (AllThingsD)
Huffington Post co-founder Ken Lerer has been building up a supposedly stealthy video news service called NowThisNews, hiring CNN vet Eason Jordan, who put in 23 years at the station. Rather than produce hours of streaming content a day, the service is supposed to produce a handful of daily news reports, and plans to distribute them via mobile phones and social media.
