Today is World “No Tobacco” Day, a World Health Organization initiative to get people to stop smoking and understand how the tobacco industry works.
Pfizer (@pfizer_news) and the Irish Heart Foundation (@Irishheart_ie)are capitalizing on the day by encouraging smokers to turn to Twitter and Facebook for help quitting, using the social support they have to help them kick the habit.
Pfizer has launched the Quit With Help campaign today, and is using the hashtag #queetwithhelp to create a community of smokers who are ready to ditch their cigarettes.
And, for every tweet sent with the hashtag #queetwithhelp, Pfizer will donate €1 to the Irish Heart Foundation.
Organizers are hoping that by publicly announcing that they’re ready to quit smoking, smokers will get the support they need from their Twitter community. Using social networks to accomplish something can be very effective, as the tweeter will be held responsible by a large community of his or her peers.
Singer George Michael is one notable example of someone who has used Twitter to quite smoking, helping put “social quitting” on the map. Of course, Michael has over 430,000 followers, but people with a smaller network can get the same level of support from their connections. It’s all a matter of being open, honest, and reaching out to them.
So instead of lighting up a cigarette next time you have a craving, tweet! The average craving lasts for five minutes, so if you can spend all of those five minutes on your smartphone interacting with your followers, you might be able to weather the storm.
