One Minute Of Twitter Silence Today For The Victims Of Norway Attacks

Organizers of a movement to show respect for the victims of the Norway attacks are asking Twitter and Facebook users to observe one minute of silence today at 17:00 GMT / 12:00 ET.

In an attempt to connect the world through social media, four Irish friends are trying to take their one minute of Twitter silence campaign – which they’re calling Twinute Silence – global.

68 people at a youth camp were killed by gunman Anders Behring Breivik, after he had set off a bomb in an office building which killed 8 others.

In their memory, the organizers of Twinute Silence ask that people refrain from tweeting or posting status updates on Facebook for one minute, starting at 17:00 GMT / 12:00 ET. The #twinutesilence hashtag is being used to talk about the effort.

According to IFPress, one of the four organizers explained that Twinute Silence is meant to be a global show of respect:

“It’s a way everybody all over the world, no matter your language, your religion or your beliefs, can show your support for the victims and their families.”

Although it will be difficult to calculate just how many people participate in this event, the hashtag has taken off with a few tweets every minute or so. And, although there are detractors who claim this is just a pointless exercise, the supporters far outnumber them.
