On Twitter, Never Fear Being Vulgar – Just Boring, Middle Class Or Dull

Twitter’s learning curve can be pretty steep. When you first join the network it pays to quickly educate yourself on the platform’s norms and expectations, read as much as you can about all things Twitter, and to figure out what’s what. Fast.

Sure, go ahead and find somebody to mentor you. That’s actually a very smart play. But please: make sure it isn’t a guru.

Time passes. It’s tricky at first, and you make a few silly mistakes. But after a while, you’ve got it all worked out. Things make sense. You’ve fitted right in, and become part of the crowd.

And just like that, you disappear.

Nobody Cares About My Content! Nobody Is Clicking On My Links! Is Twitter All Hype?

My post on Wednesday about the low engagement levels on Twitter triggered some great responses.

As I wrote, my ‘evidence’ was almost completely anecdotal but it seems to have resonated with a lot of people, many of whom have expressed concern at the value of investing heavily in social media if so few people are paying attention.

The poor response rate on Twitter – if you average better than half a per cent you’re world class – raises some important questions. Is it all a waste of time and effort? Is Twitter all hype?
