“If you follow me, I’ll follow you back!”
Those of us who have been on Twitter for any length of time probably cringe at those words, which are so popular among the crowd that simply “wants more followers.” Still, at least these folks have a follow strategy – do you?
Everything you do on Twitter should have a purpose. Why did you send that tweet? Why that particular retweet? But too often the question “why did I follow that person?” gets lost in the fog.
What is a follow strategy
A follow strategy is a set of rules or a guideline you use to determine who you follow on Twitter. It helps individuals and businesses decide whether an account is worth following, based on the value they add.
Some people have a strategy in their head already, but just haven’t formalized it. If you’re in the habit of following people in your industry, but no one else, you’ve got a strategy.
For businesses, it’s a good idea to have a strategy written down somewhere, especially if you have multiple team members managing your Twitter account.
Types of follow strategies
Follow strategies come in all shapes and sizes. As mentioned above, there are some accounts that will follow back anyone who follows them. This type of indiscriminate following can be an effective way to gain more followers quickly, but chances are those aren’t very quality or targeted followers.
Another type of follow strategy on the other end of the spectrum is one espoused by a lot of celebrities – follow no one.
And in between the two lies a whole host of strategies: follow anyone recommended by a trusted source; follow accounts you have something in common with; follow active accounts; follow local accounts… there are as many follow strategies as there are users on Twitter!
The benefits of a follow strategy
So why not just follow whoever you want, whenever you want?
For starters, a follow strategy will keep your account organized. You’ll spend less time pruning back unnecessary followers if you only follow accounts with a purpose.
Using a strategy will also ensure that you get as much relevant information out of Twitter as possible. Your timeline will be more manageable with 100 targeted accounts contributing than with 1,000 accounts from a variety of industries and interests.
And lastly, a follow strategy can be a great tool for networking, learning, and even generating leads on Twitter. Knowing that everyone you follow is somehow valuable to you, you can more easily reach out to the right accounts. Whether you’re using Twitter as an individual and want to learn from others, or you’re a business wanting to generate leads, a follow strategy will help you get at the right accounts, quickly.
