Eau De Colon – Why Something Smells Funny On Twitter

Previously I have written about the importance of paying attention to the use of grammar and spelling in your tweets, especially if you want to be taken seriously on Twitter. For lots of people, notably bosses, clients and colleagues, this stuff matters. First impressions count and, like it or not, we’re continuously judged by appearance, and this includes our ability to accurately craft a sentence.

Of course, not everybody cares about such frivolity, and sometimes that’s a good thing, because occasionally a typographical error on Twitter is so marvellous, and so hugely enjoyable, that a simple spelling mistake turns into something that quickly goes viral.

Consider this tweet from Jessica Howard, aka Twitter user @howie_lovee, which she sent earlier this morning.

I guess that’s why they call it eau de toilette.

I’m not exaggerating when I say that, shortly after this was sent, the shit very much hit the fan. Howard’s message, and her accidental use of ‘colon’ instead of ‘cologne’, has been retweeted and favourited heavily, creating a mini-meme on Twitter which is rapidly piling up. Tweet search is positively littered with references and comments.

Howard’s tweet, and others like it, also hit the top spot on Reddit. This one’s a personal fave:

So that’s how it is in their family.

It’s not just Howard and a few others who have made spelling mistake, either. Looking at Twitter search, it’s clear that a lot of people think that the stuff that you spray on yourself to immediately change the way that you smell actually comes from your colon.

And, of course, in a roundabout way, they’re right.
