Six-Second Video Vines Prove Perfect For Shorty Awards [VIDEOS]
Over the past five years, the Shorty Awards (honoring the best in social media) have added new categories to their list, with the introduction of widely used social media platforms and tools. The newest categories for the fifth annual awards ceremony taking place on April 8 in New York City, include Pinterest Brand Presence and Animated GIF of the Year.
Perhaps the sixth annual event will honor the best use of Vine (Twitter’s six-second video app), which exploded onto the social media scene earlier this year as a free iOS app available for iPhone.
Shorty Awards Director Matt Semel has scripted Vines for talent, a new role that probably isn’t recognized on IMBD.
When asked about his experience, Semel replied (in a snarky tone), “Writing ‘Vineplays’ has proven to be far more challenging than I expected. It can take me and my writing staff days of hard writing and rewriting to fill an entire 6.5 seconds with compelling content.”
The result: ‘more meat’ added to what 140 characters limits— transforming a simple one-dimensional tweet into something alive, personable and technically, never ending.
On Twitter, you’ll find contributions from Real-Time Academy jury members, including Twitter’s Joel Lunenfeld, IAB’s Peter Minnium and Draftfcb’s Chris Miller.
And several presenters took to their phones to make their Shorty appearances official.

Vine will also be used during the awards ceremony, to capture key moments and reactions from winners. If I have my way, I’ll be Vining celebs as they walk down the red carpet, but it will certainly be a challenge as there are no do-overs.
It will be interesting to see if future award ceremonies (beyond the Shorty Awards) follow this trend and encourage their participants (and fans) to use Vine to boost excitement leading up to the main event.
