World Map Of Social Media: Facebook Dominates, Twitter Fights For 2nd Place

In the June 2012 edition of the World Map Of Social Networks, social media strategist Vincenzo Cosenza explores the most popular social networks in each country right now.

And while it’s no surprise that Facebook is the number one social network on the planet, Twitter is vying for second place with a handful of other contenders.

The map looks at the most popular social networks in 137 countries. In 126 of those countries, Facebook wins. There is really no network that even comes close to Facebook’s 900+ million users and its number-one position around the world.

Take a look at the map below to see just how prolific Facebook is:

Facebook has 232 million users in Europe, 222 million in North America, and 219 million users Asia.

That’s some massive domination, but there are still a handful of networks that have their eyes on the big one, including Twitter.

Twitter is the second-most popular network in Japan, Sweden, the United Kingdom and the United States. It is in third place in Australia, Austria, Canada, Finland, Italy, the Netherlands, and Norway.

Neck-and-neck with Twitter is LinkedIn (in North America) and Badoo (in Europe).

While Twitter is doing its best to stave off the other networks for second place, Facebook has been solidifying its lead.

You can take a look at an animated world map of social media that goes from 17 different top social networks in 2009 to just 6 in 2012.

Cosenza got his social network popularity data from Alexa and Google Trends for Websites.
