Standing in the Rain for Hours – and not Getting in
Jill Olmstead, Journalism Division Director for American University’s School of Communication, was not in good spirits late Wednesday after waiting in the pouring rain for much of the afternoon – and not getting into The Daily Show in D.C.’s taping. She suspects she might have bad luck, writing, “Guess I am not meant to see this President, I got stuck in the tunnel during the Inaugural and never saw the light of day with the event and went home to the couch.”
The Daily Show’s “Audience Management” had issued many warnings to ticket holders. The time to arrive sounded more and more ominous. First, the absolute time was 4 p.m., then 2:30 p.m. and then 2 p.m. Nothing was guaranteed. They had overbooked seats — apparently standard practice. Some ticket holders arrived as early as 11 a.m. to get prime seating on the ground floor of the Sidney Harman Arts Center.
Olmstead wrote FishbowlDC last night recounting her day…
Olmstead’s letter:
Despite standing in line for hours, I not only didn’t make it in to the Daily Show to see President Obama, I was the person who was next in line to be admitted and then……the door closed. More than disappointed because I had helped the show get production assistants when the show called me in August… My niece got in line at 1 p.m. and stood in the pouring rain, I got there at 2:50, after hurrying from my campus obligations. After the door closed and several of us who got close started sharing our disbelief, one group behind us complained about the lack of security for the people in line because they had seen interlopers who butted ahead - we lost our seats to them. I’ll be asking my students how it was.
