Brendan Ripp Named Sports Illustrated Publisher

Brendan Ripp has been named publisher of Sports Illustrated. Ripp moves to the magazine from Fortune, where he served as VP of sales and marketing. Prior to that, Ripp — the son of Time Inc. CEO Joe Ripp — was publisher of Money and Time.

“Brendan has a long and accomplished history with the News & Sports Group, where he has held a number of leadership positions at each of our brands over the past 14 years,” wrote Todd Larsen, Time Inc.’s executive VP/group president News and Sports, in a memo to staffers.

Ripp will report to Mark Ford, Time Inc. executive VP/Sports Group president.

I am pleased to announce the appointment of Brendan Ripp to Publisher for Sports Illustrated and SI.com.

Brendan has a long and accomplished history with the News & Sports Group, where he has held a number of leadership positions at each of our brands over the past 14 years. Most recently, he served as Vice President, Sales and Marketing, at FORTUNE. Prior to that he was the Publisher of MONEY from December 2010 to October 2012 and the Publisher of TIME, Time.com and Life.com from May 2010 to October 2012.

This is something of a homecoming for Brendan, who was an undergraduate intern at Sports ILLUSTRATED in 1996 and will now report to Mark Ford, Time Inc. EVP/Sports Group President, with whom he worked closely at TIME and FORTUNE in his previous roles.  He joins a brand with significant momentum and  revenue growth. This was driven by gains in newsstand sales for the first time in four years; growth in website and mobile audience and revenue, and the launch of new editorial products, including several video initiatives and the colossally successful The MMQB franchise. All of this serves as a precursor to the coming relaunch of the new SI.com and the 50thAnniversary edition of Swimsuit, among other initiatives.

At FORTUNE, Brendan drove revenue growth and the continued expansion of FORTUNE’s robust conference business, which hosted its most successful FORTUNE Global Forum in 2013.  Last year’s FORTUNE 500 issue was the biggest issue since 2008 and had the best ad performance of any FORTUNE issue since 2004. At TIME, Brendan was responsible for growing TIME’s business across new media platforms and for fostering TIME’s reputation as a leading advertising solutions partner. In April 2010, Brendan helped launch TIME’s iPad app, the first iPad app for Time Warner, which was followed by the hugely successful LIFE Photo App. At MONEY, Brendan was instrumental in launching multiplatform, cross-title partnerships with THIS OLD HOUSE and REAL SIMPLE.  Notably, Brendan began his Time Inc. career in 2000 as a Junior Sales Representative for TIME, and  over the next decade rose through the organization becoming the publication’s youngest Publisher (33) since founding editor, Henry Luce.

FORTUNE is in great hands with Group Publisher News and Business Jed Hartman and his team, and we will be moving swiftly to fill Brendan’s position.
