The Drum‘s Stephen Lepitak was one of the first to the news today that after three years with UK site themediabriefing.com, Patrick Smith is heading over to BuzzFeed UK as media editor starting next month. Smith will remain based in London.
The move comes, appropriately enough, not long after Smith wrote a piece about BuzzFeed hitting profitability. From Lepitak’s item:
Smith, a former reporter for Press Gazette, joined as editor of website themediabriefing.com in August 2010, while also serving as a visiting lecturer to City University London during that period where he taught digital journalism skills. At the time of writing, it was unclear whether a successor would be appointed.
Media Briefing co-founders Neil Thackray and Rory Brown are surely sorry to their editor and chief analyst go. A spokesperson for BuzzFeed tells FishbowlNY there are currently 10 editorial employees at the London office, with plans to add several more by year’s end.
