Arianna Cuts the Ribbon at HuffPost Hawaii

Another day, another impressive HuffPost vertical.

In her announcement post celebrating the debut of Huffington Post Hawaii, site founder Arianna Huffington highlights a most impressive lynchpin. In this case, HuffPost is partnered with an outfit named the best news site in Hawaii for the past three years by the Society of Professional Journalists:

We are delighted to be partnering with Honolulu Civil Beat, a beacon of journalism in Hawaii focusing on public affairs and investigative reporting, with deep roots in the local culture. In its three years, Civil Beat has committed itself to the mission of its founder, Pierre Omidyar – who also founded eBay – and has created a “a vibrant civic square.”

They’ve published investigations of topics ranging from the condition of Waikiki’s iconic Ala Wai Canal to police disciplinary files and why they are kept secret from the public. And their investigative series on the skyrocketing costs of school bus contracts prompted state officials to revamp the way contracts are handled. This is real impact journalism.

High-profile launch day bloggers include beach volleyball Olympian Kevin Wong, Holly Brown of Big Brothers Big Sisters Hawaii and Hawaii Tourism Authority president Mike McCartney. Anyone recently or currently employed at Patch may not want to read this Arianna missive from Honolulu; the sunny-side AOL robustness will simply be too much to stomach.
