Michael Hastings, an excellent reporter, contributing editor to Rolling Stone and best selling author, is joining BuzzFeed to cover Barack Obama’s re-election effort. Hastings tweeted the news just a few minutes ago. “Friends, very excited to announce that I’ll be joining Ben Smith and his political team at BuzzFeed for the duration of the 2012 campaign,” wrote Hastings.

“Michael Hastings is one of the great original reporters of his generation, and his Rolling Stone article ‘The Runaway General’ reflected his total fearlessness,” said Smith, in a press release. “We’re thrilled to add him to a web native political team that’s intensely focused on breaking news and on original, revelatory reporting.”

Hastings will report from the campaign trail beginning April 2.
