For the past three years, Owen Phillips (pictured) has worked tirelessly alongside Hollywood Reporter editorial director Janice Min to re-brand a moribund trade. After coming up for air this spring, Phillips decided it was the right time to move on to his next career challenge: a consulting post with Jeff Stern‘s Alegra Enterprises.
This is a start-up departure for Phillips. Previously, on the east coast, he worked at WSJ magazine, Men’s Vogue and The New Yorker.
“It’s been an incredible experience working on the relaunch of The Hollywood Reporter,” Phillips tells FishbowlNY, “and I’m grateful to Janice for the opportunity.”
“After years of big media launches, I’m looking forward to doing something new,” he adds. “At Alegra, we’ll be creating content – in entertainment and beyond – for new distribution channels, particularly mobile.”
“Above all , I’m very proud of everything the staff at THR has accomplished. I’ll miss both the veterans and the new crew — and maybe even the all-nighters.”
Phillips’ departure means that Matthew Belloni will soon stand as the publication’s sole executive editor. Also announced yesterday by THR was the appointment of Daniel Strauss to the position of general manager, digital. Phillips’ last day at THR is Friday.
At The New Yorker, where he remained until 2006, Phillips became the illustration editor after working his way up from the mailroom. During that time, he also occasionally contributed art and photography reviews. Congrats to him on this exciting new opportunity.
Here’s the memo sent out earlier today by Min:
I am writing to let you know that after nearly three years, Owen Phillips will be departing The Hollywood Reporter. As many of you know, Owen was a key part of the team that was here from the beginning of the relaunch of The Hollywood Reporter, and part of a group that took a leap of faith, relocating from New York to Los Angeles to help implement our reinvention. It was a gamble that paid off beyond anyone’s expectation for our staff and readers alike. During his time, he worked closely with much of the edit staff, business side, our international team and our critics.
Today we have the finest entertainment operation in the business. In November, The Hollywood Reporter print and digital editions will celebrate their third anniversary. I am grateful to Owen for his dedication and efforts during this time.
In his next move, he will be serving as a consultant to Jeff Stern’s Alegra Enterprises to develop media and entertainment properties. His last day with The Hollywood Reporter is Friday. Please join me in wishing him all the best.
