Time Adds Four

Time_magazine_logoTime has added four staffers. Below are the details, followed by the memo announcing the moves from Time’s managing editor Nancy Gibbs and Edward Felsenthal, Time.com’s managing editor.

  • Nikhil Kumar joins as senior editor of Time International. Kumar comes to Time from The Independent, where he was New York correspondent.
  • Dan Stewart joins as deputy editor for Time’s continuous news desk. Stewart was previously a senior editor at The Week.
  • Sam Lansky joins as deputy culture editor. He most recently worked as a senior editor for Idolator.

  • Sam Frizell comes to Time as a breaking news reporter. Frizell has written for Reuters, The Atlantic and more.

As we kick off what promises to be an exciting 2014 for TIME—starting with the coming relaunch of TIME.com—we wanted to take a moment to celebrate recent milestones and welcome some new additions to the staff.

TIME.com broke yet another all-time traffic record in December, with unique visitors reaching 45.5 million on Omniture — a 52% increase year-over-year and up from 28 million in March, when we began our transformation of the site. Video streams are up 800% from March, and social referrals hit an all-time record at 18.2 million. Some great news from our partners on the sales front as well: In December, Time.com was 100% sold out in video and nearly sold out in display ads.

Among the December top-10 were our Person of the Year poll and package, the photo team’s fabulous year-end curations, Jessica Roy on women and media, and Jim Poniewozik on the Duck Dynasty drama. Other recent highlights include Rana Foroohar with the first, and to date only, interview with incoming Fed Chair Janet Yellen, Seth Meyers posing with his TIME cover up and down the Golden Globes’ red carpet, and the debut of Steven Brill’s Bitter Pill column including his second appearance for TIME on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.

We are also delighted to announce four new hires:

Nikhil Kumar joins us as Senior Editor, TIME International. He comes from The Independent, where he was New York correspondent, covering everything from Wall Street to the Sandy Hook shootings. Before moving to New York, Nikhil worked five years at the newspaper’s London HQ as a business reporter, markets editor and assistant foreign editor. Nikhil studied philosophy and law in London and interned at the Indian Supreme Court.

Dan Stewart joins as Deputy Editor on TIME’s continuous news desk. Dan was previously senior editor at The Week. Among his many laurels: Dan’s writing on prison reform gained wide readership this fall when he found himself plagiarized by Sen. Rand Paul. Dan has written about architecture, film and politics for various publications in his native United Kingdom.

Sam Lansky becomes Deputy Culture Editor. He previously worked at SpinMedia, where he was Senior Editor of the pop music web site Idolator. Sam has also written for New YorkThe AtlanticEsquire and Cosmopolitan, among others. Originally from New York, he studied at Vassar College and The New School.

Sam Frizell is our newest breaking news reporter. He has written for Reuters and The Atlantic, among other publications. For the past year, Sam has reported on the U.S. steel industry for a commodities publication owned by Institutional Investor. A native of NYC, Sam graduated from Bowdoin College in 2012, where he reported and wrote for the paper and ran cross country.

Please join us in welcoming Nikhil, both Sams and Dan.
